Shall we dance…the tango?

Tango in Mendoza, Argentina

Shall we dance…123? By chance, as we were walking along the streets of Mendoza, Argentina, we stumbled upon the Teatro Independencia (“Independence Theatre.”) As we peered through the ticket window, we saw a banner for a tango festival on sale for that Sunday. Our eyes were bright-eyed and we decided..when in Argentina…

The show began at 8:30 P.M. The red curtains were drawn and the host announced that there would be a tango competition, professional dancing, and singing. What luck? We had a chance to see so much and only paid 25 pesos ($ 6-7 USD.)

The opening act was the amateur competition. We felt like we were in the movie, Strictly Ballroom, as we were watching the performers compete on stage. We picked our favorite pairs of dancers and cheered them on during the competition.

Next, the professional dancers did their routines. Tango, which originated in Buenos Aires, has a very quick tempo and watching these dancers were amazing. The fancy footwork and the exaggerated embraces were definitely apparent in the performances. A singing exhibition and even an instrument ensemble was thrown in the mix of the festival.

Overall, I enjoyed the experience. I left the theatre with the pitter-patter of my feet and a large smile on my face.
