Eating abroad – 3 dollars for 3 people

When traveling abroad for a long period, eating out every day may kill your stomach or break the bank.  If you are staying in a hostel or have access to a kitchen stove, cooking a meal is quite simple.  We (the English couple and I) were in Punta Arenas, Chile.  It was the middle of winter and snow covered the roads and houses.  It was the perfect day to stay in and enjoy a home-cooked meal.

Here is a quick and cheap recipe for cooking an easy pasta dish- 3 dollars for 3 people.

Ingredients:  Approximate Cost is $3.00 USD!

  • Bag of pasta
  • Bag of tomato sauce
  • 1 red bell pepper
  • 1 green bell pepper
  • 1 green jalapeno
  • 3 rolls of bread

10 Steps for an Easy Pasta Dish**:

Approximate Cooking Time:  15-20 minutes

  1. Buy ingredients (shown above) at a local grocery store.
  2. Wash the bell peppers and jalapeno.  Slice the vegetables to desired pieces.
  3. Boil water in a pot and place bag of pasta into pot.

    Boil that pasta!

  4. Drain pasta when ready and place it to the side.  (Cooking time can take about 5-7 minutes. Better yet-throw a strand of pasta on the wall to check the readiness.)
  5. Stir-fry the bell peppers and jalapeno for 3-5 minutes.
  6. Place tomato sauce into a pot and heat for 3-5 minutes.
  7. Mix the bell peppers and jalapeno with the tomato sauce in the pot.

    Mix vegetables with sauce

  8. Place the pasta into the tomato-bell peppers-jalapeno sauce in the pot.
  9. Slice pieces of bread.

  10. Serve pasta with bread.  ENJOY!

    The Finale

**Note time of cooking varies depending on the stove.

About Jan

In 2004 and 2010, I set aside time to travel the world in 3 parts. In 2004, I traveled to Thailand, Europe, and Pacific Northwest region of the U.S. In 2010, I traveled to 3 continents: Asia, South America, and Africa. I am not sure if I have a fascination with the number 3, but I seem to be constantly traveling by numbers.
