Travel Websites for the Practical Traveler

I like to think I am somewhat of a savvy traveler. I sign up for price alerts and look for travel discounts. I have recently read an article published by the New York Times (NYT), “19 Web Sites for Travel Savings in 2012” that is helpful for the practical traveler. The article categorizes the websites based on the following:  airfare, hotel, vacation rentals, and everything else.

An interesting website mentioned in the NYT article is Yapta.com.  After you book an airline ticket through an airline site, Yapta.com tracks your airline prices and helps you receive refunds (usually if the airfare difference is between $75-$150 dollars).

I recommend reading this article – you never know – you may save some extra money for your upcoming travels.

Some of my favorite websites (some of the websites were mentioned in the NYT article):

  • For price alerts, I use AirfareWatchdog.com and Kayak.comYou can choose to receive price alerts to your email address on a periodic basis based on your destination.
  • For price comparisons, I use Kayak.com as it compares prices for hotels, airfare, etc on different travel websites (Expedia, Travelocity, Priceline.com, etc).
  • For promotion and discounts, I use Travelzoo and receive periodic emails for the Top 20 deals of the week.  In addition, there are local deals that you can use for dining and entertainment purposes.  I also sign up for individual airline promotions through the airline websites.  I also check out Travelocity, Expedia,  and Orbitz for last minute deals.

Are there any websites you recommend using?

About Jan

In 2004 and 2010, I set aside time to travel the world in 3 parts. In 2004, I traveled to Thailand, Europe, and Pacific Northwest region of the U.S. In 2010, I traveled to 3 continents: Asia, South America, and Africa. I am not sure if I have a fascination with the number 3, but I seem to be constantly traveling by numbers.
